The Young Marines promotes mental, moral, and physical development. The program focuses on character building, leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle, and is the focal point for the U.S. Marine Corps' Youth Drug Demand Reduction efforts. The core values are Discipline, Leadership, and Teamwork. Our membership is open to all youth and adult volunteers who want to be part of Strengthening the lives of America's Youth via an anti-drug and community service organization. We invite you to join us by becoming a member of the Oregon Cascade Yong Marines of the National Young Marines (since October 17, 1965). We meet at the Navy and Marine Corps Swan Island Training Center in Portland

We are one of over 300 units belonging to the national Young Marine Program. Started in 1958 and then chartered by the Marine Corps League in 1965, the Young Marine program endeavors to instill positive values in today's boys and girls, aged 8 to 18. Oregon Cascade Young Marines, like other Young Marine Units is not a funded organization and relies on the hard work of the Young Marines through fundraising efforts and the benevolence of the business community and service organizations. Youth receive opportunities to build their pride and leadership skills through such challenging events like rappelling, physical fitness, camping, close order drill, swimming, land navigation and many other activities. They get opportunities to earn promotions and ribbons through their achievements and as they grow in skill. There are also travel opportunities as the Young Marines participate in National Schools or encampments with other units.

Our objective is to provide the best quality of experience we can for each Young Marine who attends drills. Scheduling the date, time, and location of each drill is based upon available staff, training opportunies, facilities, physical environment, and the appropriateness of the environment. This is primarily determined by which adults will be on-site for the drill, what activities/training can be provided, what facilities are available, what facilities environment is most conducive to providing the activities/training, and what facilities provide a safe and appropriate role model environment for the Young Marines.

We are not making Marines so we do not teach weapons, warfare or tactics but we do wear the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor on our uniforms and take pride in our appearance and conduct. We cannot give your child self-esteem, no one can, but we can give him or her opportunities to earn it. The Young Marine program is not a program for couch potatoes. Drills are not a daycare service, a recreation organization, or an entertainment center. The program requires a commitment to excel and drills are intended to be challenging, exciting, and motivating.
