Young Marines Announces Partnership with Scholastic Action Shooting Program
Monday, June 26, 2017

SASPThe Young Marines, national youth organization, has formed a partnership with the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) to help promote competitive pistol shooting within the organization.

“Our partnership with the SASP provides an opportunity for our Young Marines to receive quality instruction on firearms safety and marksmanship,” said Col William P. Davis USMC (Ret), national executive director and CEO of the Young Marines. “Combined with opportunities for competition within the SASP program and the intramural competition within our program, the partnership opens new doors for our Young Marines.”

The program offers youth from 5th grade through college, the opportunity to safely participate in team-based action shooting sports which is a sport like no other in that it offers a level playing field across genders and age.

“We are excited to partner with the Young Marines,” said Rick Leach, interim national director of the SASP. “Both of our programs are targeted toward youth development, so it is a perfect fit.”

The program is in sync with Young Marines’ program which focuses on character building and leadership and promotes a lifestyle that is conducive to being productive members of society. The SASP is designed to instill in young people a set of personal values and character traits for fair play, compassionate understanding, individual responsibility, sportsmanship, self-discipline and personal commitment.

It is hoped that these qualities will stay with youth members of the Young Marines throughout their lifetimes, helping each young athlete reach his or her full potential.

Youth members may participate using .22 rifles, .22 handguns and/or centerfire handguns, and targets are steel circle or rectangular plates.

Young Marines unit leadership interested in more information on signing up their units should contact Rick Leach by email at rleach@sssfonline.com

About the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation

The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) is 501(c)(3) public charity responsible for all aspects of the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) across the United States. SCTP and SASP are youth development programs in which adult coaches and other volunteers use shooting sports to teach and to demonstrate sportsmanship, responsibility, honesty, ethics, integrity, teamwork, and other positive life skills. SCTP was developed as a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) until the SSSF was created in 2007 to operate the SCTP. In 2012, SSSF created the SASP and became the managing foundation of both programs.
