Young Marines Names Six Winners of Division Young Marine of the Year

The Young Marines, a national youth organization, has named six division winners of one of its most prestigious awards - the Division Young Marine of the Year. The winners will travel to Guam and Iwo Jima in the spring for the annual Reunion of Honor which this year takes place Saturday, March 25, 2017 on Iwo Jima.

From these six winners, one will be named National Young Marine of the Year in May at the Young Marines Adult Leaders’ Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The division winners are:

  • Division 1 –  YM SgtMaj Jordan A. James, 17, of Jeannette, Pennsylvania. James is a member of the Westmoreland County Young Marines under the command of Ronald Maxson. James is a junior at Penn-Trafford High School. 

  • Division 2 – YM SgtMaj Caleb Maurer, 16, of Bromley, Kentucky. Maurer is a member of the Northern Kentucky Young Marines under the command of Lynne Arnold. He is a sophomore at Dixie Heights High School.

  • Division 3 – YM SgtMaj Carson George, 17, of Oviedo, Florida. He is a member of the Orlando Devil Dogs Young Marines under the command of John Gionet. George is a junior at Paul J. Hagerty High School.

  • Division 4 – YM SgtMaj Angel Luiz Orozco, 16, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is a member of the Pikes Peak Young Marines under the command of Kevin Coward. Orozco is a junior at Sierra High School.

  • Division 5 - YM SgtMaj Michael Dulin, 17, of Cleveland, Ohio. He is a member of the Greater Cleveland Young Marines under the command of Craig Boone. Dulin is a junior at Olmsted Falls High School.

  • Division 6 – YM SgtMaj Anna Saucedo, 16, of Temecula, California. She is a member of the Temecula Valley Young Marines under the command of Wilson Lee. Saucedo is a junior at Temecula Valley High School.

“These Young Marines represent some of the best and brightest young men and women from across our great nation,” said Col William P. Davis USMC (Ret), national executive director and CEO of the Young Marines. "Each shares qualities of leadership, self-confidence and good citizenship, and each lives a drug free lifestyle which is a cornerstone of the Young Marines. I am very proud of all six division winners."

The six honorees are invited to the annual Reunion of Honor trip to Guam and Iwo Jima. The year 2017 marks the 72nd anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima and the 73rd for Guam. Annually, American and Japanese veterans come together for remembrances of their fallen brothers and to recall the fierce battles that took place on the two islands during World War II. The Young Marines act as escorts for the veterans during the trip.

The Young Marines is a national non-profit 501c(3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, age eight through the completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork and self-discipline, so its members can live and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Since the Young Marines' humble beginnings in 1959 with one unit and a handful of boys, the organization has grown to 275 units with 9,200 youth and 2,760 adult volunteers in 40 states, the District of Columbia and Okinawa with affiliates in other countries.
